Saturday
I usually do not write these on Saturday but I have a little bit of down time at the moment. Since I am getting stronger my trainer revealed to me that May is usually the month that he pushes his clients, you know, so I can be in bikini shape and all. He was not happy when I told him I have to skip two weeks of training because I will be in a two-week intensive course for my degree which runs during the hours I would be with him. I’ll still go in but it will be at off hours. Last week of classes for me this coming week, even though Flo is going to pick up the pace on our workouts I should still get some me time
I was finally cleared by the doctor to resume sports if I want to. He did say that my quad is still weak but I should start doing a little more on the leg. I don’t think I am going back to volleyball yet but sometime soon.
Only a few more weeks left of Lost. Does anyone else think that the final scene ever should be Jack having intercourse with the Island. Just me huh?

Back
It’s strange; I was so focused on my school work that I felt that If I took a few minutes to write my blog I would be losing precious school work time. I have never had that happen to me ever. Although, I feel like I am doing very well this semester I will never take four classes and work full time ever again. I do not believe that there is four classes in a row that I need to take anyway but I am just saying.
I am happy to be back!

Tip-Off
Tomorrow is my Masters exam and I am a little nervous. I’ll be happy when it is done. I have been studying a lot and I am hoping it will pay off. That is one of the reasons I haven’t updated the blog recently, because I have been spending every waking minute studying, training or sleeping. There is no rest.
I am excited as always for March Madness starting today. It is a little sad without the Huskies there but I’ll manage to watch a good bit of the games. My bracket is boring. I like Kansas over Kentucky.

Study Study Study
I have forgotten about the blog. I have my Masters exam on Friday and have been studying my brains out. I'm a little stressed out but I am hanging in there. Wish me luck.
The storm here really took a lot out of the neighboring towns. I actually had to take an extra day of rest because my knees were in a lot of pain. I really do blame the weather.
Back to studying.

I'd like to thank the Academy
I actually got some sleep this weekend which I was desperately in need of. I did a lot of lifting last week and am really seeing results. The weather is getting warmer out too which helps me add on a lot of walking. The extra boost of cardio will be helpful in the coming months.
Have a good week!

Hurt-Tar
By the way since I have been able to walk, scratch that, since I have been able to stand on the scale without toppling over I have lost 22 lbs. It’s about 12 lbs since I started working with Flo. I’m getting there. I have about 13-18 more lbs that I want to lose but at that point I may look a little too thin. I figure as long as I keep lifting I’ll be where I want to be.
I work with Flo today. I have my lunch in my bag.
I am really looking forward to the Oscars. With all the garbage going on between the Avatar camp and the Hurtlocker camp I am hoping Inglorious Basterds wins the whole thing. Nice job by the Hurtlocker producer to get his invitation revoked.
On a related note: I am really happy I don’t have Cablevision anymore.

Scared Females
The snow storm on Friday really messed up my schedule. I stayed home on Friday but made it to the gym on Saturday and Sunday. I would really like to have the weather stop screwing up my stuff here. I am really starting to drop weight. Since I started walking again after surgery (not since I started with Flo) I have dropped 20 lbs. Most of the weight I have lost with Flo has come in the last 7-10 days. Something must have clicked on. I am hoping to keep it up. I say I have about 15 more lbs (maybe a little less) to lose before I have in a real good place. The second I ditched my diet regiment anxiety I started losing more.
I was at the gym late on Saturday. I am usually way gone by the time it gets dark out but on Saturday I went around 6pm. I did a bit of boxing and it felt good. I actually scared a female gym patron out of the room I was in. She comes in and drops one of those yoga mats on the ground. She looks up and sees me staring at the swinging heavy bag, I was in between reps, and she looks a little frightened but hangs in there. I am all amped up; I put my gloves back on and start swinging again. About 10 punches in the strap on my right glove comes apart and I yell a really bad expletive (this is a family blog; I will not repeat it unless you ask me to). She picks up her things and leaves. It’s nice to see that I still have that sort of effect on females.

Go Team Go
The Olympic hockey has been great. I am enjoying the paths that the four remaining teams have taken. I am hoping to catch the 3rd period (unless I don’t catch the score then I will watch it on DVR) of the USA and Finland on Friday because it starts at 3PM! Slovakia and Canada play at 9:30PM.
Other than that I have paid little attention to the Olympics. There were some instances where I saw curling but other than that I am really disinterested in most of it. Horray, for national pride!

SWEEP!
I am still trying to figure out curling. Every time I put on the TV it’s on. Instead of turning it off and doing something productive I am become memorized in the event. Early last week I was marveling at the fact the US guy looked just like McGee from NCIS. Sadly, I heard he has been benched because he is horrible and misses big shots. I didn’t know there was “choking” in curling. I heard he was referred to as the Bill Buckner of curling…ouch.

The Axe Murderer
I did have a great last week. I went to the gym every day. Normally I take a day off during the weekend but since I only made the actual gym four times the week before I thought it would be good to push myself a little bit. I am nearing my first weight goal which is 20 lbs. I hold my weight goal from when I started moving around after surgery which is a few months before I started this blog and working with the trainer.
I changed up my diet too. I was having a hard time with the eating five times a day thing. It’s really hard to tell someone who is trying to lose weight that they need to eat more and not less. I was giving myself anxiety about keeping on an eating schedule and trying to be regimented and making sure I am eating 100% correctly. It didn’t work and it took up too much of my time. Here is what I am doing now until I fix up my frame: I eat when I am hungry. I make sure I eat sometime before I work out. I do not eat after 8 pm. I seem to be rocking one big meal and a lot of smaller ones. It allows me some flexibility. I dropped three lbs last week and I actually see new visible muscles in my back and stomach. I’m not saying I could take a punch from Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva but I am saying I am getting there.
Great hockey game last night from the USA and Canada! Nice job by NBC ignoring the event and putting it on MSNBC. Last night was the longest that channel has ever been on in my presence. I think the NHL should take a page from the Olympics and try to cut down on the commercials to keep the pace up. The game last night was 2:30 of great action.
I made it to Madison Square Garden on Saturday with some friends to see the Knicks with Tracy McGrady play the Oklahoma City Thunder and Kevin Durant. The Garden was such a buzz and I got to see the next great player in the NBA play and hit big time shots in Kevin Durant.
Happy Monday.

Jumping the Shark
Thursday I was back in the gym. I did my 5K and did heavy abs. Today I will box. I go back to lifting next week when Flo gets back from vacation. I am thinking about changing the diet. I feel like I am not getting the results I need. My days are too long to cut calories, there has to be a good middle ground but the nice thing is I can see the change. Maybe I will just toss the scale. I go to the knee doctor today. I am hoping he says I can go back to sports. It has been over 6 months.

Superbowl Food Coma
The Superbowl was OK. It wasn’t as good as the last few years and it wasn’t bad as some of the years prior to that. I did eat a lot. I did take the fat day thing to its limits and I am paying for it today. My stomach and head are bothering me.
I am all cardio this week. Today I’ll go in a run/jog/walk and do abs. Tuesday I’ll do boxing, step-ups and abs.
Only nine days until pitchers and catchers report to spring training.
Randy Couture has entered my list of people I will always root for.
Happy Monday!

Sleep Walking Elite
Yesterday was long. Wednesdays are always my longest day. I did find myself at the gym for an hour in between work and class. I tried to cut more time off my 5K but I just didn’t have the energy. I did it in about 43 minutes, fixing the speed and incline as the time went on. I wasn’t thrilled with my results but I did finish the 5K. I’ll go back and do it again either Friday or Sunday.
Thursday
Yesterday was much better. I had a little more energy and got through my crazy shoulder/back/arms workout with only puking up a little blood (I cleaned it up). I am a little sore today but that’s OK. I was really awake until the last 20 minutes of class last night and mercifully the teacher let us go. I was so thankful too. I am back in the gym today and will do a cardio workout, 5K, boxing, abs since I will be taking Saturday off. Next week I go back to the knee doctor and Flo wants me to ask him if I can really start running and doing side to side motion. If I get clearance it’ll be back on the volleyball court in some capacity. I haven’t really jumped much in a long time so I am sure I will be jittery.
Enjoy the snow this weekend, apparently Jersey is going to get covered and shipped out into the Atlantic somewhere. If anyone in Jersey gets stuck, give me a call and I’ll send out a rescue boat.

Stay Home
I bought this sweater I am wearing now just before the New Year and it didn’t fit great. I put it on again today and it actually fits perfectly. That was a good ego boost. Wednesday is my longest day of the week. I’ll get to the gym for less than an hour today and just do cardio, I’ll do another 5K and then go to class for the rest of the night.
There was a guy yesterday in the gym, he was all fired up, cursing and whatever. We went up to him to see if he was OK. He told us that his ex-girlfriend was now working out in the same gym as him. He was convinced she did it on purpose and was now going to go workout in the other gym (sounds like a rough breakup). To me that is pretty vindictive. Someone coming to a safe place to ruin someone’s good time is really lousy. Do me a favor and stay home and let someone have their space.
I thought the Lost premiere was really great last night. It takes a lot to keep my attention for three hours without fast forwarding through commercials. Much like every other Lost episode, I was left confused.
Oscar nods came out yesterday. The Oscars are probably my favorite non sporting event. I’d really like to see Up in the Air before the show happens.

Busy Days
I’ve decided to extend my Fat Meal on Sunday so as to go through the entire run time on the Superbowl. It’s a judgment call and I am making it. Sunday is the next day I’ll even get a chance to relax.
I know no one cares, and in fact neither do I, but: Colts 30, Saints 24. I reserve the right to change my mind, especially if Dwight Feeney doesn’t play or in Peyton Manning contracts VD from one of those Miami night girls.

Dems Fightin' Words
Today was good too. I usually stay home on Saturday but since I had to miss Wednesday I decided today was a good day to make it up. I did another 5K and actually knocked off another 2:15. I was able to get the speed up to 5 for a little while but I did it on zero incline. So I started my time at 46:10 and today I was down to 41:15. It felt really good! After that I did abs and then tried out my fancy new boxing gloves. I was there almost two hours.
Yesterday while doing shoulders this guy came up to Flo and I. He asked us if our wife/girlfriend/significant other were to punch us with all their might would we hit back? Flo and I looked at each other and said “no”. He was really fired up. I tried to make him laugh by reciting Chris Rocks “I won’t hit a female but I’ll shake the S**T out of one”. There was no reaction from the guy. He sort of stormed off and we went back to shoulders. Towards the end of our session he came up to us and said that his girl had punched him really hard in the knee and was still mad about it. We both said to not hit her but go talk to her. I hope he listened. I never even got his name.

Catching Up
It’s been a few days. I really have been running around a lot. Tuesday I was in the gym and did chest, shoulders and a little back. Wednesday I had to miss because I had work, a meeting at school and then two classes. I really hit a wall sometime around 8:30 towards the end of my second class. I really wanted to take a nap and the class was very interesting too. I wonder what would have happened if the class wasn’t engaging. I just lost all my energy. Thursday was better and I had more energy and did a really great arms workout. Thankfully I can lift them today. I’ll head back to the gym today and do a 5k and then hit the heavy bag. I usually do not work out on Saturday but since I had to miss Wednesday I will add the day in.
Today is Friday but I am going to use my Fat Day tomorrow.
I changed the format of the blog. Apparently it was tough to read.

Double Trouble
I am really thinking about adding in mornings and doing two-a-days for a while. I don’t know how I feel about getting up that early to go work out but I might be able to do more this way. I would go in the morning, do cardio and go to work then go back most afternoons and do weights, abs and more cardio. I have been thinking a lot about it. I may be nuts but I am going to lose some afternoon with school and school work. I’d like to see the scale start to move a little more.

Monday 1/25
Happy Monday! It’s raining and boy is it tough to get up on a Monday when it is raining. It actually not rain but the tears of the Jets and Vikings fans. I had a good day at the gym yesterday. I did legs and they really are getting much stronger. I added in weighted step-ups to my routine of leg press (1 and 2 legs), squats, wall slides and calf raises. I also did heavy abs. I was dragging a little bit but I got through it all. I did not do cardio yesterday because I try to not to mix legs and cardio so I do not get hurt. I am back in the gym today and will do cardio and abs. I am not going to lift because I will be working with Flo on Tuesday.
Saturday was my day off and I really hadn’t planned on even taking off my PJ’s. I was in the middle of a video when the power went out. Looks like a transformer blew in my neighborhood. I was actually more upset that the video game I was playing was no longer on. I wasn’t worried about the food in the fridge or the heat in the house, no, I was ticked off that it had been a good hour since I had saved anything. Also, I really wanted to watch UConn VS Texas, thankfully my father was home and I went to his place.
Peyton Manning is too good.
Bret Favre throwing across his body at the end of regulation to cost his team a victory helped deal with the Jets loss a little easier.
Should be a good Superbowl.

Fat Day 1
Thursday was good but I am still feeling it. Flo and I did a heavy back work out, preceded by 30 minutes of cardio. I skipped abs because I had done them 4 days in row.
Towards the end of the week I feel myself getting really tired.
Friday was a great workout. I walked in and Flo gave me a boxing/heavybag workout and it was brutal. He wanted me to do five rotations but I was only able to do four. Then he told me after that he only expected me to do 2-3 rotations. I guess I did better than I was supposed to?
Had my first Fat Day yesterday (it’s really only a meal) I did have a big piece of chicken parm and it was real good but I didn’t drink any alcohol, have any bread or dessert. It was a good night out.
Today is a day off from the gym. I’ll get back there tomorrow.
Go Jets.

The Calmness
The diet is going well. I’m not as hungry as I was a few days ago. Flo keeps asking me what I am eating and I have to rattle it off. The dude is relentless.
After I finished the 5K and did my Ab work I wanted to go hit the heavy bag for a few minutes. I went and bought tape so my knuckles don’t explode again. I got all psyched up, put on the Slayer on headphones and headed over to room with the bags. The only problem is the yoga or meditation class was occupying the room. They are all calm and serene and what am I supposed to do, come in calling the punching bag every name in the book? I turned around. I owe myself a few minutes when the calm people are not in the room.
Calm people, HMPF.

Music/The Rex Ryan Diet
My IPOD has gotten a lot angrier this past month. Usually the total
amount of music is only half angry but I have since chucked some
lighter stuff and added some more songs that are on the heavier side.
There were some albums that I just re-bought like “Filter’s”- Short Bus
and the “Toadies” – Rubberneck which are both phenomenal rock albums
that do not nearly get enough credit. The album that I seem to be playing the most recently is “Chevelle’s”—Sci Fi Crimes which top to bottom is the best album I bought all last year with Them Crooked Vultures coming in a close second.
I have room for angry stuff on my IPOD what are you guys listening to?
The Rex Ryan diet
I read somewhere (I can’t remember where) that Rex Ryan the head coach of the New York Jets has put on 50lbs since he got the gig at the beginning of the year. It doesn’t take a genius to realize that he is a stress eater. What I heard today on the radio is that Rex Ryan is taking in 7000 calories a day. I’m not sure if that is true or not but it sure is a possibility. The only other person I’ve ever heard admit that they take in 7000 calories a day is Michael Phelps and well, he’s got all those gold medals hanging around his neck and can eat whatever he wants with no repercussions. I’m sure if you really tried and put your mind to it you could bang out 7000 calories a day but you wouldn’t feel good about yourself. I picture Rex Ryan in some sort of war paint having someone fire a gun at a wild pig and then immediately eating it without first cooking it. Tasty!
I am guessing 14,000 per day this week as the Jets prepare for the Colts. Perhaps someone should keep an eye on Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne this week and ignore all calls regarding dinner from Rex Ryan.
There may be ritual killings if the Jets make it to the Superbowl. I’m both worried and excited.

Fists of Explosion
It’s back to reality tomorrow as I head back to campus. This is my last heavy semester for a very long time. I am pretty excited but it is a daunting task that is ahead of me.
I never made it to the Garden today to see the Knicks; things come up, no big deal. I did however go into the gym and do heavy abs and heavy cardio. It was a great workout. I didn’t lift today because I work with Flo tomorrow. I’d like to be as rested as possible when I go in tomorrow figuring he is going to kick my butt.
Sunday, I went back to the boxing because I had so much fun with it on Friday. I went to the store and bought fancy UFC gloves because I didn’t like the way the boxing gloves felt. On Sunday I went in their fists flying and actually messed up my knuckles pretty good. I took off the gloves and I had removed a bunch of skin and boy did it sting. I mean, there I was punching the daylights out of this bag only to jump up and down saying “owie, owie” over again. You ever seen a big dude jump around with UFC gloves saying “owie”? Me either. I guess it’ll be wise to work in the gloves and maybe tape up my hands. How many people do you think will ask if I was in a fight? I’m going to guess 5.
Started the diet on Sunday even though today is my official first day. I did really well, stuck with the turkey, nuts, fruits, yogurts and stuff that I can make. Also, I was at a friend’s house and they all ate pizza and I didn’t have any, which was huge because pizza is a weakness. My only problem was around 9pm I became really hungry. I don’t think I ate enough during the day. It would have been enough if I wasn’t working out so much and needed extra energy. I’ll give it a few days before I think about doing any sort of changing.
The kitchen has always been a weak piece for me. I really can’t cook. It is a deficiency that I have never been able to topple. I need to keep the diet simple so I can handle it. Anything that is going to take time and has multiple directions will not be done. That’s the reality; the kitchen and I don’t mix.

Training not Dieting
Yesterday was really good. Instead of weights I did boxing and boy did it feel good to hit something. I think I am off to buy my own gloves this week.
Today is a day off from training. I sat in traffic for most of the afternoon as a car seemingly exploded on 95 North. All that was left by the time I inched to the spot was a burnt frame. I hope everyone is OK.
I need to keep reminding myself that I am not dieting. I am training. I am working towards getting stronger and healthier. This is what I keep telling myself, as the scale doesn’t budge much. I am lifting like a maniac and my weights are starting to go up so I must be doing something right.
I’m back to the gym tomorrow and will do legs and am going to add some weights when I do squats. I think my legs are getting stronger and can handle it
Got to the movies last night and saw Sherlock Holmes and really enjoyed it. Whoever is in charge of keeping Robert Downey Jr. off drugs needs a raise.
I’m psyched for 24 premiere tomorrow. I really want there to be one hour in the 24 day where Jack is taking a nap, with a little spittle running down his cheek while his mouth is wide opening letting out a deafening snore. There also should be a blanket with some ducks on it.

Some things never change
Yesterday was good. I had way more energy than I did on Wednesday. We worked on chest and boy do my boobs hurt. Flo came up to me when I first came in and asked me how I felt from yesterday and I told him I was happy with the impromptu training session but that I was really tired, which I was. I told him I would never say no to training but I was pretty zonked. He said that it was a trick question because even If I had said “no” he was going to make me train anyway. Thanks, glad to know my opinion counts. I’m actually quite happy with that.
It’s good to have goals. I know that next week I go back to school and add so much more to my plate so last night I decided it would be a good idea to finish the game Borderlands. I realize that I will not have any time for video games until May and did not want to let the game sit. I know, I know, I am so cool but little did I know that it was going to take me an extra six hours to complete the thing. I made it to bed just before 3 AM. It is now 8 AM and I am surprisingly awake and feel fine, except for my boobs. I am back in the gym today and have a day off tomorrow.
1/14- Tongue Electrocution
Yesterday was interesting. I was dead tired. I did go to the gym because I had to drop something off. I was on the treadmill getting in the cardio I had missed from the day before when Flo came over and asked me if I wanted to train. What am I going to say “No, get away from me you evil trainer”? Of course not, and I really wanted to work out, so we did a lot of arms and abs and boy was I dragging. I missed lunch, (not my fault). I went home after that, sat down and didn’t move for the next six or so hours (I did shower first). There is a big shopping trip planned in my future, this Saturday I am going to Costco to buy everything needed for this diet. I’ve been told to watch my eating and start the diet on its appropriate Monday start day. I will be breaking one of my own rules here and I am going to buy stuff I can’t pronounce. Although, I can’t pronounce any of the words of a diet coke can either but I still drink it. However, those are ingredients (ingredients, really?) and not the name of the product so I am good. That’s what I keep telling myself and I am fine with it. Let’s move on.
My biggest concern with the diet is being able to go out and not be a menu pain. I don’t want to be that guy who needs to nitpick over everything that is on a restaurant menu so I need to be really careful that I don’t ruin everyone’s good time. “You know what you should really eat…” You’ll never hear that phrase come out of my mouth in a social setting. I’d rather tongue kiss an electric mixer before I go and do that. .
Two words I am kicking from my vocabulary because I can’t speak them correctly:
Irreparably and Similarly.
The word I spell wrong the most: Definitely
Done.
Tik Tok
Yesterday was good. I was running late to the gym but I made it on time. I also got my diet. I’ll end up starting it on Monday because I need to go shopping and get all that food that I cannot pronounce. Flo and I worked on back and shoulders. I am definitely getting stronger and stuff is starting to fit a little better even though I haven’t lost much weight. I’m sure that will come when I get all the food I need.
I looked at the diet and I read off all the stuff. I did have to ask what musceli is. Flo told me that it’s sort of an oat meal. I understand oat meal. When I got home and showed the diet to a few people they all asked me if I needed clarification on what exactly musceli is. People know me too well. If it’s too tough to spell or pronounce I won’t go near it.
We’ll I’m really all set now. There is no “I” in team, but there is an “I” in Win, but there’s also an “I” in encephalitis (OK 2) and no one wants that. What was I talking about?
I usually don’t go to the gym on Wednesday’s but I need to drop something off so I will do the cardio that I missed yesterday when I was stuck in traffic.
I’m at work today I hear a few people singing Kesha’s “Tik Tok”, which may or may not be the most annoyingly catchy song I’ve ever heard. Maybe you like it, and that’s ok. I’m just saying that it bothers me. How long do you think it took Kesha (or whoever wrote the song) to come up with the “I woke up in the morning and I feel like P-Diddy” line? I’m thinking weeks. I can see her ((or whoever wrote it) staring at blank screen and writing “woke up in the morning and I feel like”…Big Poppa, Tupac, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Joplin…no, wait, they’re all dead. How does she know what he feels like when he wakes up in the morning? Maybe I don’t want to know that answer but Diddy, last time I heard actually bought all of Manhattan. I think he’s feeling OK. I think the Tik Tok is actually her 15 minute clock slowly draining.
1/12
Next week I go back to campus. I am a little concerned with keeping up my work-out schedule when I have to juggle four classes and my job. I written in time on my schedule to do all of this but it is going to be a grind. It’s all right though because this brutal schedule will only be for a few months as I finish up my degree. I am going to have to keep Wednesday as a day off if I want to keep my sanity.
1/11
Today was good too. I’ll be expecting my diet written in simple words tomorrow which is good because I am eating better but I really want to get moving on this thing. I did legs today. 35 (15 backwards) minutes and two miles on the treadmill, then I did abs and legs. The weights I do on the legs are still on the lighter side. My doctor told me I could do whatever I want except for leg extensions. I read that as “anything that looks like leg extension I should skip”. So, I did 1-leg press, 2-leg press, wall slides, calf raises and squats on the machine. I really want to get going on the diet. I could really use the regimentation.
1/10
Ran/walked my butt off
After doing weights Tuesday, Thursday and Friday I took Saturday off
Sunday I walked/ran 4.25 miles. I wanted to go for time instead of speed so I went for an hour and 15 minutes. 15 of that 75 were done backwards which I do at a slow speed. I did abs and I was done. Good day.
Went home and watched the Patriots get smoked. Those guys are starting to look a little old.
Green Bay VS Arizona was a great game if you like offense. I thought Rodgers facemask was grabbed. I saw it right away and was surprised there was no call. I really like Aaron Rodgers. He reminds me a little bit of Tino Martinez when he took over 1st base after Don Mattingly retired. Before you Red Sox fans go nuts I am a Mets fan and we don’t have those kinds of players. “Remember that time Jose Reyes got hurt…”
(Update: 1/14: Carlos Beltran out for all of April, Sweet!)
On New Years’ Eve I went to a party with some friends from college. It was a great night since there were a lot of people that I haven’t seen in a long time. At one portion of the night my friends wife came up to me a little inebriated and told me that I have a nickname at the gym. I was a little surprised because I try to be inconspicuous as possible when I am there. Unless I am working with the trainer I don’t really talk much when I am there. It turns out that I am known as the “guy who walks backwards on the treadmill”, apparently I am that guy. It took a friend to tell me that I am “that dude” to realize that I have been causing unnecessary attention to myself. I decree that my physical therapist said that walking backwards on the treadmill is good for my legs and will strengthen my hamstrings. I stand firm on my current walking backwards on the treadmill. If I fall and crack my head open I’ll stop. I have a feeling that someone is reading this going “ohhhhhhh I know that guy, he’s strange.” C’mon guys I’m nice, come talk to me.
Quick Story 1
This may get me training on the roof after Flo reads this but here’s what happened.
Last Friday (1/8) right after Flo and I decided to go ahead with this program I proceeded to walk around the corner to the supermarket and buy just a ton of garbage food. Here I was starting a new venture with the help of others and I took myself into the processed food zone and spent close to 50 bucks on nothing that can be constituted as having any health merit.
Now hang on. I can explain this. A party was planned at my house for the next day to watch the wild-card round football games and it was my job to get snacks. I was so disgusted with myself the second I walked in the door because I knew what I was going to do. I was muttering up and down the aisles just hoping that no one from LA Fitness would recognize me and make me do laps in traffic. It took about four seconds for me to mentally break our deal. Thankfully, I didn’t eat that much junk that Saturday but I did do the “Jets win” dance in my living room after they beat Cincinnati. I suppose feeling bad ended up being a good thing.
(If Cincinnati was playing anyone other than the Jets I would have rooted for them. Those guys really need a break.)
Backlogs
January 7th-9th
Looks like I am keeping a journal of the “remake Paul” program that I am doing. I’m not sure how it is going to work out but I am more afraid of disappointing Flo (trainer) than I am at disappointing myself (awww). Seriously though, my trainer has helped me through a lot of adversity in the last few months. I asked him the other day about something to train for. Sure, I have personal and fitness goals that I want to meet but I really wanted “something to train for”. One of my friends has really gotten into great shape and he is running all these crazy races in towns that I have never heard of. We have had conversations that mirror my horrified feelings:
Me: Man, I don’t know about this race thing.
Chris: C’mon man it’ll be a good time. It is fifteen miles of mildly discovered wilderness in Headpain, New York.
Me: Well what does it entail?
Chris: You get a small backpack with a kitten picture on it, two left gloves, four small almonds to eat and a bottle of Jack and then you run!
Me: I think I’m good.
Needless to say running these types of races are not for me. They work for him though and I am a huge fan of all he has accomplished. I really don’t run much at all, unless something is chasing me, which is like twice a week. I actually don’t mind running but it has been a very long time and my knee strength is not complete yet. Maybe one day I can do one of those races but not yet. This really left me thinking about what I could do to make a training venture happen.
I went in for my regular Thursday training session at LA Fitness in Stamford with Flo. I asked him if he had any ideas about what I could do to fill this void I have when it comes to my fitness. We brainstormed for a little while and we came up with a “Before and After” program. As long as I show some results then the LA Fitness will back this program that we are doing. After I left he went and spoke to management and they all thought it was a great idea and could be some great publicity for all parties involved. The second we agreed to do this Flo upped my weights and told me I was in deep trouble and that I was not allowed to enter a donut shop without written consent from him. Geez man, all I wanted was a cocoa.
I had a few requests to go through with Flo before I went head first into one of these programs and the main one was that I needed a specific diet. For it to work it has to be very regimented: Day 1- do this, Day 2-do this, Day 6- cry aloud as the bad music infiltrates my veins, Day-7, sleep all day. If I get wiggle room with the diet I will not follow it correctly. It needs to be strict so there is no way I can wander off. The first thing Flo said to me is that there is a cheat day per week on this thing. I am changing the words “cheat day” to “fat day”, so if any of you see me pigging out give me a look and say “Fat Day?” and I will nod in agreement as I digest the silverware that I have eaten.
Do you know tough it is to compute that eating more will help you lose weight? Try and tell someone who is trying to lose any sort of poundage that they need to eat MORE in order for that to occur. If a trainer is reading this please explain this in detail to your trainee’s. They need to know why this is.
So that’s my deal. I’m trying this thing and I am putting it out there for all to see. I am starting to love the gym again (it has been a long time). I’ve got the next three months to start making myself look better and as long as I have the support of friends, family and trainer I should do very well.

Braving the Zoo
I am calling this blog “Hunting at the Zoo”. No, I am not going to the zoo to gun down animals, although…no, I’m good. The title is there because of what it represents; my goals of changing my body and overall health into something I can be proud of and the gym is a zoo to which I need to figure out how to go about all this. There was no easy way to tell my friends and family that I need a change but that is what I am doing. The idea behind this blog is to document for everyone what I am going through, good or bad, and hopefully people can get a laugh at my expense.
This whole “before and after” program was actually my idea and is in a no way a “New Year’s Resolution” quick fix. I just happen to get myself healthy after knee surgery around this time of year. Good timing! The good people at LA Fitness- Stamford are aware of my goals and are solidly behind me, but they are waiting to see if fanboy (me) can get his stuff together in about three months before we all sit and chat. However, my trainer, Flo is as into this as I am and has become my biggest fan and has told me on several occasions that I am now in “trouble” and that “I may not be able to move tomorrow” and “call me Flo-Flo one more time and you’re going off the roof”.
I know you can’t see me right now but I am not grossly overweight (I’m actually not that bad weight wise) and do not have any health problems other than recovering from knee surgery which, really hurt. By the way, next time someone tells you that ACL/Meniscus surgery is no big deal; you tell them I said they are liars, unless they are much bigger than you, in which case just agree with them and mutter under your breath as you walk away. I am doing this because I need to get healthy. I had so much pain in my legs for the last seven plus years. I have finally gotten it fixed and can now really get back to the way I need to be. I’ve done quick fixes to lose weight before and they do work…for a short period and even though I became a “bean pole”, I was miserable and more unhealthy then when I started because my energy was zonked and I was more lethargic than ever. It didn’t take long to gain it back. I’m in a good spot now; I’ve got a great trainer, the will to work and motivation. I’m not only looking to only get healthier but stronger and thinner (which may take a while).
The people at LA Fitness are really great. If you have a question about anything just ask them.
If you don’t know how to use a machine or do an exercise correctly please ask. I don’t want anyone to get hurt because of incorrect procedure.
I’ve got a handful of entries on backlog. I’ll post them after I send out the initial word.
If you’re at the gym and wondering who this yahoo is, I am the jackass who walks backwards on the treadmill, yes, I am that dude. Come over and say hi.
